Wildrose Vote: Lessons from Turkmenistan?

http://foreignpolicy.com/2012/02/13/the-dictators-dilemma-to-win-with-95-percent-or-99/

When I was growing up in small town Saskatchewan in the 60s and 70s and the NDP ruled the province from one decade to another it was a well-known fact that every Elections official was “in the bag” for the NDP.  (The PCs, now the U-PCs, have been appointing “friendlies” from their ranks in recent decades, too.) Saskatchewan Conservatives, and even Liberals, tried in vain to do something about it but, exactly like this corrupted Wildrose-UCP initiative, they had been stripped of any access to a bureaucracy that could be trusted to make the proper inquiries.  Finally one year in the mid-60s, after conservative agitators embarrassed the Sask NDP gv’t badly enough, they were able to convince them to appoint an Elections investigator.  My friend’s Mother, who had some experience as an Elections official, was appointed to launch an inquiry into The Vote.

Mary’s report established that NDP workers who collected names for the Voters List had added names of dead people and others who had moved away a long time before.  What was really astonishing was that most of them had voted, too!

If that sort of thing doesn’t make you a little queasy then you would not be bothered by Saturday’s vote and the disenfranchisement mess leading up to it, either.  But to add a little levity to the reality that there were likely dozens of people who knew this was going to happen and thousands more who have watched it happen in silence, consider this: even with this level of fraud taking place by the sitting NDP gov’t in the 60s you would think that they would have won these local polls with at least 95% of the vote, wouldn’t you?  Well, you’d be wrong.  Even these crooked, entitled socialists weren’t so stupid and corrupt as to think they could sell the notion that 95.5% of any group would all vote the same on any question, even if it was “Is the Earth round?”  Now how about this: they tell me the Jason Kenney’s PCs passed their Unity vote with the same 95% steamroller YES vote! Wow, two votes in one day exactly the same: Duck everyone ~ a meteor the size of Saturn is hurtling towards Earth!

Levity aside: I have been inundated with emails and phone calls from people for the last several days asking why they did not get their voting packages as promised.  Desperation began to set in when they were unable to reach the Party office; when they were told they were 126 in line, held for a half hour, were up to 53, then the line was dropped; who should they call, how could they get a pin number; how were they to exercise their vote without one; why was all this happening; and on and on?

Finally resignation, and disgust, set in.  Last night and today (Sunday) emails like this one continue to be sent to me ~ start where the xxxs start, at the bottom of the email chain that is in italics:

 Hello Sharon

I have never missed a vote in my life, even when I just moved to ______ when I didn’t know anyone running for town council or much of their politics I’d vote anyway, just pick candidates that I read about in the paper who I thought would be alright in office. Having been a supporter and a member of WR since near its beginning one would think getting the voting package would be rather straight forward and should have been delivered a couple months ago.  I am sorry I don’t know that many WR members or how they voted but the few I do will strike up a conversation with them and see how they voted or if they were able to.  We are going to phone ___________  in a bit and see how he thought everything went. Am sure he travelled to Red Deer for the meeting. I know he wasn’t very enthusiastic about the thought of unity with the PCs but how he voted in the end I don’t know.

__________ just reminded me that she feels that the WR can’t even manage something this small how are they going to manage the Province. Says she is done with politics and she reminded me of the history of the Reform Party.   Last night I unsubscribed to the WR emails.

I forwarded your web site to our Alberta friends and a few in other jurisdictions.  What happened to WR is not new, its happened to every political party I am aware of including the above mentioned Reform Party.

Thank you again for the great effort you made in helping us.

Hi ________;

I am sorry to hear this.  It appears it would have been an effort in futility anyway.  I saw how determined you were to vote and I appreciate that, anyway.

This is a terrible disappointment.  As you can see in a previous email, we are trying to assemble enough numbers to see if we can challenge this vote.  It just sounds so totally ludicrous, so we will certainly try.  Even in Pelly Saskatchewan where NDP would resurrect people out of the grave to vote NDP, even then they couldn’t get to a 95% vote.

If you think you know people who voted NO can you ask them to reach out to me, please.  I know there must be one or two of them in (your area).

Sorry Sharon, We went for a 3 hour hike in the hills south of _______  after I sent the last email to you. I see we lost our party.  We will not be supporting anything that comes out of this merger just like I told the people that were hounding us for donations to the Conservative Party after Harper blew the last election. Take us off your supporter list, we will not support a “liberal” party with a conservative name.  They haven’t called us since.  Thank you for your help. We didn’t see any use to keep trying as ________ had spoken to someone at WR who promised immediate action on Thursday, both __________ (our CA CFO) and you have tried, we thought may as well just do something we enjoy.

 Hello Sharon and Judy

We called the WR phone number, were 240 or more in line, then were told by the computer that we were 258 in line, twice after 17 min the first time and 14 min the second time of being on hold we were cut off. So far it doesn’t look like we will be voting.

Hello Sharon

We still do not have our voting package. _________ called WR yesterday and actually talked to a lady. She said she would email the pins to ________’s phone. That still has not arrived.

A sort of communal madness seems to have descended over many Albertans who like to call themselves conservative. I hesitate to call them conservatives because the ones I know and consort with have great critical sense and try to avoid hysteria.  They like to at least try to approach their politics in a rational manner.

What happened Saturday was a fixed vote or, at the best, a compromised vote, simple as that.  In a matter of five minutes, without even breaking a sweat, one of my NO friends and I added up 80 people we knew who voted NO. That is 7% of the NO vote.  Could it be possible that in the entire province 7% of the NO vote came from identifiable people in a tiny little corner of the province?  But regardless how this UCP, little brother to the CPC, came about, it was birthed in ignominy. There is only a few ways to see this vote: 1) a paroxysm of post office pique took hold and the post office sorted out hundreds of Wildrose voting packages and threw them in the dumpster 2) despite that addresses of members never went missing before, in an inexplicable computer glitch, they were suddenly lost just in time for this important Dis-Unity vote 3) a tech filter insured every YES vote got through and lots of NO votes were dropped and then the exact same votes and numbers were transferred directly through to the Kenney PCs for a second count – why bother going through the tedious motions of counting new ballots when their buddy Brian had already accomplished an astonishing 95.5% rout or 4) there was an intentional decision to disenfranchise dozens, perhaps hundreds, of Wildrose voters.  You decide.

As one of the people who defined and built the Wildrose Party, watching the infiltration of it by libertarians and liberals, has been a demoralizing experience.  Libertarians, both here and everywhere, cannot build a political machine of their own so they ride on the coattails of conservatives. Politicians like Jason Kenney and Stephen Harper, who have gone to Ottawa and disappointed honest, thinking, conservatives back home at every turn, watched the growth of a principled provincial conservative Party willing to get out of the back rooms and respect its’ members to hold the power to decide policy and governance, could not bear to have the mirror held up to contrast with their self-serving, careless, dictatorial governance style.  They meddled constantly in Wildrose and soon knew that it had to be destroyed or people may expect the federal Conservatives to act the same, and that would never do. One after another of its operatives insinuated themselves into positions of influence and power in Wildrose and the result is what we see today.

How long, this time, will it take Albertans to see through this rebirth of trough politics? Of elitist, insider corruption? And how long, this time, will it take for Alberta voters to reject it, soundly? It is highly unlikely there is any dynasty happening here.  Albertans have been burned badly and I doubt principled, ethical, Albertans will want to go back there soon, or for long.

Cole Kander, Assistant to Libertarian Leader-Wanna-be Derek Fildebrandt, railed at me on a Facebook page for what he implied was my calling this effort “corrupted”.  Let him prove to us now that it was not. That he is convinced ALL members were afforded their rights not just those who bought memberships at the last minute so they could conveniently help bring down the Wildrose Party.  Let him prove that this vote was fair and fully enfranchised.  It is time for volunteers who were on the inside and know what was going on to stop distorting the facts and burying the truth.  Tell us what you KNOW about the failure of this vote. If you have the ethics you insist you do, you need to tell us what only you know was happening during this voting fiasco.  You are the only ones who can, if you have the integrity to, expose it for what it became because surely you know the people at the top who orchestrated it won’t. That cushy inside job Brian Jean promised you will soon evaporate. We are asking that you Do the Right Thing, now.

I’ll be happy to hear from you at: info@letstalkcandidly.com. I promise, if you still want to stay “under the radar” you will remain anonymous.

Also, anyone who never did get their voting package or receive a pin or if you received more than one package or pin, or can attest to any other way the vote was corrupted, please contact me.  If you know anyone else who can attest to the same please pass this message on or contact me, too.  We need everyone’s help to prove the fact that this CPC-inspired Unity initiative was a farce from start to finish.

And everyone, please Subscribe to this site below.
